Apart from the points mentioned above, I also think that 2009 is going to demand better ideas from the PR professionals. Same ideas have been used for years now. High time some thinking is done and new, cheaper, and creative ideas are thought about.

Nick, you have some great insight here. I recently graduated from Loyola Chicago, and was one of four who started the PRSSA chapter there, always an exciting experience (and yes I am part of that 90%) :) I think your point on Diversity in the Industry is key--and while we have to remember that we may be trying to reach out to a diverse audience, social platforms have, in large part, made it easier to connect with each individual on a personal level, which is what I love so much. I wish I had gained more of an understanding of how the blogosphere played a role in PR when I was in school, luckily I had some great internships that have helped me learn as I go. What I hope our generation carries out is honesty, authenticity, and recognition that "public relations" does not just have to do with the public, but ultimately each individual relationship we build within the big picture.

Hope to continue the conversation!

Hi Nick,

Enjoyed the post.

In 2009, I think we'll starting seeing PR making a stronger showing in general business curriculums.

For instance: I'm currently a second year MBA student at Walsh College. Walsh, which has always been known as one of "the" business schools in Metro Detroit, has just partnered with MSU to offer PR and advertising courses as an alternative to a marketing concentration.

I opted for an MBA because I thought having a better understanding of how businesses work would make me a more well-rounded PR pro. However, I love the idea of taking complementary PR courses at the graduate level. They would be a welcome break from the mind-numbing finance/legal/econ courses (Sorry business majors, but you know I'm right).

Additionally, look at all the exposure the general business population will now have to core PR principles and, in some instances, social media. Current and future decision makers (the guys who'll be hiring our agencies) will now have a greater understanding of how PR has become the ultimate influencer when it comes to reaching buyers and target audiences.

Nick you are way ahead of the game with your thinking. One of the things to remember is that while in a sense social media are just new tools, they also point to the need for folks in PR to remind clients they need to have conversations with their customers and talk with them, not at them as we used to do when our only available tools were mainstream media.

Great post as always Nick. I definitely agree with the stat about PRSSA membership being 90 percent female. I think our CMU chapter demonstrates this, but I also feel that our male membership has been on the rise since I first joined three years ago. Hopefully it will keep increasing!
